DW

Situated in the heart of Wigan, the DW Stadium (also known as The Brick Community Stadium) stands tall as one of the region’s most iconic landmarks.

The DW actually stands for David Whelan, who owned the stadium and Wigan Athletic, and is also the owner of The Wrightington Hotel. Since its opening in 1999, the stadium has become a beloved space for both sport and entertainment, playing a significant role in Wigan’s identity and community spirit. With a capacity of over 25,000, it’s the proud home of Wigan Athletic Football Club and Wigan Warriors Rugby League Club, welcoming thousands of passionate fans through its gates each season.

    History of the Stadium

The DW Stadium first opened its doors in 1999, replacing the former Springfield Park as the home of Wigan Athletic Football Club. Built on land that had previously been used for industrial purposes, the stadium marked a significant milestone in the town's development, representing both a new era for local football and a major investment in Wigan’s sporting infrastructure. The venue was initially known as the JJB Stadium in recognition of its principal sponsor, but was later renamed DW Stadium after a change in ownership, and has since changed its name to The Brick Community Stadium, marking a partnership with local anti-poverty charity, The Brick.

Throughout its history, the stadium has played host to some memorable sporting moments. As the home of Wigan Athletic, the stadium witnessed the club's rise to the Premier League in 2005 and their historic FA Cup victory in 2013, a triumph that marked a high point in the club’s history and cemented the venue’s place in the hearts of fans. Wigan Warriors, one of rugby league's most successful teams, also call the DW Stadium home, further adding to the venue’s legacy as a sporting hub.

Beyond sports, the stadium has also been a key venue for entertainment events, from major concerts to community events that bring the town together.

Events and Things to Do at the Stadium

While the DW Stadium is, of course, the home of the Wigan Warriors, it is by no means just a place for sport. Whether you’re a sports fan, a music lover, or simply looking for something fun to do, there’s always something happening at this iconic venue.

For sports lovers, the Wigan Athletic Football Club and Wigan Warriors Rugby League Club call the stadium home. Watching a match here is an exhilarating experience, with the stadium always buzzing with energy and excitement, whether it's a Premier League football game or a thrilling rugby league clash.

But DW Stadium is more than just about sports. The venue also hosts a variety of live concerts and entertainment events. From major touring bands to smaller, intimate performances, the stadium transforms into an electric concert space, offering fans the chance to see their favourite artists up close at their local venue.

In addition to sports and music, there are plenty of community events throughout the year, including family activities, exhibitions, and special celebrations. There’s always something to suit all ages and interests, making DW Stadium a great place for a day out, whether you're enjoying a match, a concert, or just soaking in the lively atmosphere of an event.
